Morgen started up the stairs to check the library, but a knock at the front door made her pause. Belatedly, her dog alarm went off, Lucky barking from the living room.

“You’ve gotten a little late and lax since so many people have been around,” Morgen told him as she headed for the door. She wasn’t sure who had put him back in the house. Maybe he’d been a pest as he helped the Lobos with the deck work.

With his paws on a windowsill, Lucky wagged as he barked at someone out front. A sheriff’s department SUV was parked in the driveway.

Right, she’d asked for Franklin’s help. She should have expected it. But she’d expected it much earlier, as in the night before. Fortunately, Sian hadn’t been kidnapped, so it hadn’t mattered that Franklin had never shown up at the hotel.

When she opened the door, he looked blearily at her, his eyes bloodshot with dark bags under them. Morgen realized she should have called back the night before to let him know she’d found her sister. She hoped he hadn’t been searching for Sian.

“Hi, Deputy,” Morgen said.

Franklin glowered at her, but his manners forced him to utter a polite, “Ma’am,” and tip his hat.

Lucky pushed his way outside and sidled up to him, wagging his entire body, not just his tail. Franklin only managed to ignore him for a few seconds before Lucky leaned against his leg and gazed up at him with soulful brown eyes that ensured Franklin would feel like a heel if he withheld his attention. Franklin sighed and patted the dog.

“Did you find Calista?” Morgen asked.

“After questioning a number of members of the community, who claimed that you and a wolf crashed their quilt meeting—”

Morgen raised a finger and interrupted. “It was a witch meeting, not a quilt meeting, and those ladies are all in the local coven.”

Surely, he had to know that.

Franklin kept glowering at her as he continued, “—they did give me a lead on Calista. At first, they were reluctant to admit that she’d been there, but their loyalty only lasted until I suggested that my jail cells had recently been modernized and that I was looking forward to locking some people up to try them out. They said she’s hiding out in a cabin in the woods and won’t leave the area until she’s finalized some plans.”

Plans such as slaying Morgen?

“We checked all of the known cabins in the area that are abandoned or only used for part of the year by their owners. Most were dead ends, but we did see one with the lights on as we were driving up to it. The lights went out, and the occupant disappeared in a hurry. There wasn’t another road that she could have taken—if it was indeed Calista—but she disappeared without a trace.” Franklin lowered his voice to a mutter. “Probably flew off on a broomstick.”

Hah, so he did know these women were all witches.

“I haven’t noticed any of them using brooms,” Morgen said.
